Downeast Brewery

Downeast Brewery

It’s finally summer and there’s lots to do in and around Boston. Some of us are explorers, and others of us tend to do the same thing every year.  I’d like to offer all of you some interesting and fun things to do this summer that you may not have thought of.

Last Saturday morning I walked 1.8 miles from my house to Fan Pier to meet a friend and take the water taxi to East Boston for a preview of the ICA’s installation at the Watershed. The water taxi let us off at the dock in Piers Park. Piers Park is a beautifully landscaped park with a large playground and a sailing center and its easily accessible by T as its a short walk from the Maverick Station.

After viewing the exhibits at the Watershed we walked across the road to the Downeast Cider House where we were treated to samples of cider. At the door we received tickets for 5 free samples. The samples were larger than you would expect. We stopped at 3, and after the first one I asked the bartender to only fill my glass halfway.

Instead of returning by water taxi we took the T and stopped for lunch at the Public Market; I’d never managed to get there before. It was a wonderful day with friends exploring the area on a beautiful day, especially for me. I was unfamiliar with Downeast cider and had only experienced non-alcoholic cider in the past. So there was Piers Park, Downeast Cider and the Public Market all in one day! A great way to spend several hours discovering new things in Boston.

If you don’t want to go all the way to East Boston, Downeast has a pop-up bar on the Greenway, another great place to spend a beautiful summer’s day. I need to set aside a couple of hours to explore and enjoy the Greenway . I’ve driven by it often and walked through parts of it fleatingly as I hurried to an event downtown. As I sit in my car along side the Greenway waiting for the light to turn green I often wish I could be sitting on the Greenway enjoying the view and relaxing. When you go to the Greenway also cross Atlantic Ave to Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park and check out the Rose Kennedy Rose Garden.
